Sales Trainee

CUMULUS MEDIA – (Chicago) is seeking a talented and dynamic Media Sales Trainee who is looking to learn and grow into a full-time Account Executive role.  We are looking for an individual that is passionate, motivated, goal-oriented and highly competitive.  We hire driven, resourceful, organized problem solvers who have great communication skills and the ability to cultivate professional relationships. Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn how to become successful in media sales by completing a rigorous 12-month training program that will potentially culminate with an Account Executive role
  • Report directly to our Director of Training and Development during the training period
  • Shadow Senior Account Executives in an effort to learn and develop your skill set in direct client meetings.
  • Become an expert in identifying client business needs by gaining a deep understanding of their goals, objectives and processes as well as their external environment including key market and consumer trends to proactively develop customized advertising solutions to meet client objectives
  • Create effective multi-platform, integrated sales presentations (broadcast, digital, events); learn the art of negotiation and closing
  • Beyond our broadcast products, build strong familiarity and become fully-versed in selling both Cumulus’ station digital assets (e.g. streaming, stations website and social advertising) and digital audience extension products to deliver a complete marketing solution to advertisers
  • Learn to excel at prospecting and to aggressively seek new clientele by networking, cold calling, canvassing, referrals or other means to develop a full pipeline of sales prospects
  • Follow all station and corporate procedures for preparing orders, resolving billing issues, submitting regular reports regarding sales, pipeline lists, forecasts and competitive analysis
  • Stay abreast of the competitive landscape and emerging technologies to best position Cumulus in the marketplace
  • Think creatively and generate original ideas


  • Strong desire to listen and learn the role and skill set of a media salesperson
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, social networking platforms and CRM tools
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Must be tenacious, self-motivated, and have an unyielding desire to achieve sales goals
  • Positive attitude with the willingness to get beyond comfort zone to grow professionally
  • High energy and passion for the job
  • Flexible and creative
  • Digitally savvy 
  • While this is a training position, a Media Sales background or internship experience is preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Marketing or related field is preferred
